The cuisine of Kerala is a fusion of Malabari, French, and Arabian influences and enhanced with a touch of Kerala’s unique culture, each dish in the state is an experience in itself. Here is a list of five traditional dishes of Kerala you should try at least once!! 

Idiyappam& Curry

Idiyappam curry is one of the most popular breakfast combinations in Kerala.Idiyappam is made from rice flour, salt, and water and served with a curry. 

One of the famous dishes of Kerala is Idiyappam which is a staple food in almost all households of Kerala. Also known as Noolappam in Kerala cuisine, Idiyappam, the food of Kerala, is prepared with rice flour, salt and water with some thin strands entangled together to create the exquisite texture of the dish. The texture is what makes it tasty. It is usually taken with all kinds of curries, but the best combination is with Egg Curry.

Appam with stew

Appam is a fermented rice pancake where the main ingredients are rice and coconut. It is very famous in Kerala cuisine and is eaten with stew. 

Appam is an authentic cuisine of Kerala prepared from fermented rice flour, coconut milk, coconut water and a little sugar. Stew here is influenced by the European stew and prepared with coconut milk, cinnamon, cloves and shallots and served with Appam. Mango pieces, vegetables, chicken or lamb are also used to make the stew. Aromatic whole spices, ginger and fresh coconut milk are used to augment the natural flavor of the vegetables.

Puttu and Kandala curry

Puttu and Kandala curry is relished by the people of Kerala which is considered to be one of the most well-known authentic Kerala dishes. 

It is a popular breakfast recipe out of the various Kerala dishes; Puttu is a cylindrical steamed rice cake that is prepared in a mould with minced coconut. It is usually served with ripe bananas, minced coconut, and kadala curry (the Kerala version of ‘Kala Chana’)! This dish looks very simple but is quite flavorsome and tasty.

Paladapayasam 

It is a famous sweet dessert from Kerala and is basically sweet rice kheer. 

Paladapayasam is sweet rice kheer is a special cuisine prepared in nearly all Kerala households especially during the festival of Onam and other important occasions. There are many versions of it; nonetheless, the traditional recipe uses only simple ingredients like rice ada, milk, sugar and ghee.

Ela Sadya

Ela Sadya is a special Keralite dish, a type of pure vegetarian dish conventionally served on tender banana leaves.

Ela Sadya is a version of food thali in Kerala but it's served on banana leaves. It is made and eaten during religious and special occasions like festivals, weddings, etc. This majestic lunch combination mostly consists of pachadi, kichadi, pulissery, olan, sambar, varavu, thoran, aviyal, payasam and is usually served with hot steaming rice on a banana leaf
