Famous Mythological Shows We have Grown Up Watching (Part I)

In India, mythology plays a very important part in our lives with children growing up listening to stories about Ramayana and Mahabharata. These stories feed our brains with goodness as these stories always emphasize the victory of good over evil. When television came to India in the 80s, shows like Ramayana and Mahabharata became quite famous. Here we will discuss a few mythological shows we Indians adore. 

Ramayan

Ramayan was directed and produced by RamanandSagar who was a well-known filmmaker. Ramayan became a rage when broadcasted on Doordarshan 

Ramayan is a Hindu Epic written by Sage Valmiki and it’s the story of Lord Ram. There are more than 1100 versions of Ramayan written by various writers, the most famous is Ramcharitmanas written by GoswamiTulsi Das in the Avadhi language. RamanandSagar’sRamayan is based mostly on Ramcharitmanas. Ramayan the TV serial was such a rage that during the time it is broadcasted, roads became empty. It was re telecasted during the first lockdown and gained more audiences than all seasons of Game of Thrones combined.

Mahabharat

Mahabharat’ was written by Lord Ganesha and VedVyas narrated it. It was made into a serial by B.R Chopra which broadcasted on Doordarshan in 1988.

B.R Chopra produced Mahabharat and it was directed by his son Ravi Chopra. Based on the ancient Indian epic ‘Mahabharat’ it tells the story of Pandavas and Kauravas and their combat for the throne. It also includes the story of Shri Krishna. It also includes the chapter on Bhagavad Gita. The book was divided into 18 parts known as Parvas and Bhagwat Gita is the part of BhishmaParva. It was first telecasted on TV in the year 1988 and all over again during the Corona breakout lockdown.

Shri Krishna 

RamanandSagar’s creation Shri Krishna is one of the most popular mythological shows ever. It tells the story of Shri Krishna from his birth and the instances that were not covered in the story of Mahabharat.

The popular Mythology show Shri Krishna first aired on 19 July 1993 in Doordarshan that was directed by RamanandSagar who earlier made Ramayan. It was an adaptation of incidents of the life of Lord Krishna based on the BhagavataPuran, BhramhaVaivartaPurana, Harivamsa, Bhagavad Gita, and the Mahabharata. In 1999, the show got shifted to Zee TV where the rest of the episodes were shown.
