The pioneer of action heroines in science fiction films, Sigourney Weaver is often regarded as one of the most significant female protagonists in Hollywood. Known for playing Ellen Ripley in the Alien franchise that earned her an Academy Award nomination, the 71-year-old actor is also best known for roles in drama movies. Weaver is a seven-time Golden Globe Award nominee, and the first person to win two acting Golden Globes in the same year. The Year Of Living Dangerously This 1983 Australian romantic drama film is adapted from Christopher Koch's 1978 novel of the same name. The story is about a love affair that is set in Indonesia during the overthrow of President Sukarno. It further follows a group of foreign correspondents in Jakarta on the eve of an attempted coup by the 30 September Movement in 1965. It stars Mel Gibson as the Australian journalist Guy Hamilton and Sigourney Weaver as British Embassy officer Jill Bryant and was shot in both Australia and the Philippines.
The Village This 2004 period thriller film written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan tells the story of a village whose population lives in fear of creatures inhabiting the woods beyond it, and who are referred to as ‘Those We Don't Speak Of’. A relatively slow movie, it is the moody and creepy aura that it creates about an isolated Pennsylvania community besieged by monsters. And Weaver plays one of the town elders, who keep away a deep secret about the settlement’s origins.
A Map Of The World This 1999 drama film is based on the 1994 novel of the same name by Jane Hamilton. Directed by Scott Elliott, it stars Sigourney Weaver as the protagonist Alice Goodwin - a school nurse who finds herself in a world of trouble when a young girl – daughter of her friend Theresa Collins, played by Moore - dies on her dairy farm. Weaver bagged a Golden Globe nomination for playing Alice Goodwin and is considered as one of Weaver’s best roles as a headstrong and self-righteous woman.
