To date, Indian athletes have participated in 24 Olympic Games and won 35 medals. Eight of these medals have been collected by seven female athletes.
In the past few decades, India has had a great deal of success at the Olympics, and Indian women athletes have made a substantial contribution to the success of their country at the highest level.
When Saina Nehwal, a former world No.1 player, won a bronze medal in the women's singles competition at the 2012 London Olympics, badminton became widely known in India. The Indian badminton player had previously fallen to top-seeded Wang Yihan 13-21, 13-21 in the semifinals. Saina Nehwal represented India in three Summer Games and became the first badminton player from India to win an Olympic medal.
Karnam Malleshwari, an Indian weightlifter, made history by being the first female medal winner in the Olympics. Karnam Malleshwari won a bronze medal in the 2000 Sydney Games after lifting 240 kg overall- 110 kg in the snatch and 130 kg in the clean and jerk categories. In addition, she is the first weightlifter from India, both male and female, to win an Olympic medal.
Weight lifter Mirabai Chanu won the silver medal in the 49 kg class in Tokyo 2020 with a total lift of 202 kg. Mirabai Chanu, a weightlifter from Manipur, achieved a historic first by winning a silver medal at the Olympics. Along with becoming the second Indian weightlifter to earn a medal at the Summer Games, Mirabai Chanu also became the second Indian woman to win an Olympic silver medal.
Won bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics to go along with her silver medal from Rio 2016. With the victory, PV Sindhu became the second athlete from India, behind wrestler Sushil Kumar and the first woman to win two individual Olympic medals. In addition, she made history by being the first Indian woman and just the fourth badminton player to win straight Olympic medals in women’s singles.
The first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal in wrestling was Sakshi Malik, who placed third in the women's 58 kg division at Rio 2016. Sakshi Malik qualified for the repechage round and defeated Aisuluu Tynybekova of Kyrgyzstan 8-5 winning the bronze medal.
