Chinese checkers are not Chinese

This was a German game named Halma or Stern-Halma (Stern is German for star) and was invented in Germany in 1892. The name ‘Chinese Checkers’ was a marketing ploy used in the US in 1928 and it got popularized. The game is in fact neither Chinese nor checkers.
Cigarette lighters are older than matchboxes
Even though it would seem like a low-tech matchbox is an older invention than the much swanky cigarette lighters but that isn’t the case. We loved the Eminem video but technically, the only English word that rhymes with orange is sporange – it is the part of a fern that produces asexual pores. Some also point out to a place called Blorange in the Wales but we all know that proper noun doesn’t count.
What came first – Orange fruit or orange colour?
There was a fruit called orange before there was a colour. The colour of the orange fruit started to be used as standard to describe that particular shade of “red”. Prior to this, orange colour was clubbed with red that’s why orange haired people are called redheads and robin redbreasts and red squirrels are called such despite being orange in colour.
