Originated in Scandinavia and Germany in the 19th century, the game of modern handball spread across the continent of Europe and whirled into a grand sport. At present, the game is played by great countries such as Spain, France and Germany to mention a few. Over the decades, several players have played the sport at the top level. Among them, a few have established their names in the game's history by creating unbreakable records. In this piece, we introduce you to the top handball players of all time.

Ivano Balic- From Croatia, Ivano Balic became the MVP in 2004 for the European Championships after securing the World Championship in 2003. He helped the country gain the Olympic Games in 2004, the World Championships of 2005 and 2007 and a European Championship’s cup in 2006. In an online poll, Balic was voted as the strongest male handball player of all time. In the Liga ASOBAL, he secured the best centre back award for three years in a row.

Nikola Karabatic- In the game of handball, the superstar from the Paris Saint-Germain club is hailed as the World’s Best Playmaker. Nikola is the first player in the world to be elected as the IHF World Player of the Year on three different occasions, and thrice he has finished in the second position for the IHF World Player of the Year award. In the international tournaments, he owns nine gold medals along with two European Championships MVP awards and two MVP awards from the World Championships.

Mikkel Hansen- Nobody expected a left-back player to form such an aura in the game's history, but Mikkel Hansen belongs to a unique breed of crop. The left-back is a powerful shooter and therefore, he has accomplished the top scorer award in two editions of the World Championships, twice in the EHF Champions League and twice in the LNH Division I. For the Danish national team, he has brought several laurels such as three gold medals and three silver.

Linnea Torstenson- From Sweden, Linnea Torstenson is one of the best female handball players in the sport's history. Torstenson is a left-back player who plays for club CSM București (Romanian League). The legendary player has taken part in three editions of the Olympic Games. In the 2012 Beijing Olympics, she was on the list of the top ten handball scorers.
