Her Early Life

Saina Nehwal, born in Hisar to Harvir Singh Nehwal and Usha Rani Nehwal, has an elder sister, Chandranshu. She began playing badminton at age eight when her family moved to Hyderabad. Her mother, Usha Rani, was a state-level badminton player, and Saina pursued the sport to fulfill her mother's dream of becoming a national-level player. Saina trained under Pullela Gopichand at his academy and later joined the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy in Bangalore, where she achieved the world number one ranking under U. Vimal Kumar's guidance. In his book "Dreams of a Billion: India and the Olympic Games," Gopichand expressed his deep sense of loss and sadness when Saina left his coaching and went to train in Bangalore. In 2017, she returned to Gopichand for training.

Career and Achievements

Between 2005 and 2011, Saina Nehwal's badminton journey read like a compelling saga of triumph and determination. At just 15, she clinched victory in the Asian Satellite tournament, defeating Aparna Popat. The following years brought a number of accolades – under-19 national champion, Philippines Open champion at 16, and the remarkable performance at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Nehwal soared to new heights in 2009, securing her first BWF Super Series title, the Indonesia Open, while clinching gold at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

In the dynamic years from 2012 to 2019, Saina Nehwal's badminton journey continued to shine with multiple victories and notable achievements. She defended her Swiss Open title and won the Thailand Open and Indonesia Open in 2012. The London Olympics brought her a bronze medal. Subsequent years saw a mix of wins and challenges, with noteworthy victories at the Malaysia Masters and silver at the World Championships in 2015. In 2018, she clinched gold at the Commonwealth Games and continued to excel on the international stage. In 2019, Nehwal won her first BWF Super 500 title at the Indonesia Masters and retained her national championship title. She consistently battled the world's best, consistently climbing the rankings.
