How to Kayak: Important Tips for Beginners

Truth is that, Kayaking is a fantastic way to explore nature, get some exercise, and enjoy the water from a unique perspective. Here are some important tips to help you get started and make the most of your time on the water.

Choosing the Right Kayak – Choose the right one. For beginners, a recreational kayak is usually the best choice. These kayaks are stable, easy to maneuver, and designed for calm waters. If you’re planning to paddle on the ocean or in more challenging conditions, a touring kayak might be a better fit. Choose a kayak that fits your body comfortably and you should be able to sit in it with your legs slightly bent and your back supported.

Gear Up - Your paddle should be the right length for your height and the width of your kayak. When holding the paddle above your head with your elbows bent at 90 degrees, your hands should be about shoulder-width apart. Please always wear a life jacket while kayaking, even if you’re a strong swimmer. Make sure it fits snugly and doesn’t restrict your movement.

Appropriate Clothing – You should always dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature. Quick-drying, moisture-wicking clothing is best. You should avoid wearing cotton, as it stays wet and can make you cold. Also, carry a whistle, a bilge pump, and a paddle float are good to have in case of emergencies.

Learn the Basics - To get into your kayak, place it in shallow water, sit on the edge, and swing your legs inside. To exit, do the reverse. Practice this a few times until you’re comfortable. Once you have learned it, try to hold the paddle with both hands, slightly wider than shoulder-width apart. Your knuckles should be aligned with the blade, and the concave side of the blade should face you.

Paddling Technique - Dip one blade into the water near your toes, pull it back towards your hip, and then lift it out of the water. Repeat on the other side. Keep your strokes smooth and even to maintain balance and efficiency.

Some safety tips - Always check the weather forecast before you go kayaking. Avoid kayaking in strong winds, heavy rain, or storms. Don’t venture into waters that are beyond your skill level. Stick to calm, flat water until you gain more experience. You can let someone know where you’re going and when you expect to return. It’s always a good idea to have a paddle buddy, especially when you’re just starting out.

Stay Hydrated and Protected -Bring plenty of water and wear sunscreen. A hat and sunglasses can also help protect you from the sun. Take your time getting used to the kayak and the paddle. There’s no rush in it, you should enjoy the learning process.

Practice Balance – This one is important again. Spend some time practicing your balance in calm water. Try shifting your weight and rocking the kayak gently to get a feel for its stability.
