From Dinesh Karthik to David Warner, A Review Of Legends Who Announced their Official Retirement From Cricket

These players bid farewell to cricket! 

The year 2023 saw surprising retirements in cricket. Stuart Broad shocked English fans by announcing his retirement during Ashes 2023, ahead of James Anderson. South African wicketkeeper Quinton De Kock retired from ODI cricket after the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 to focus on T20s. In early 2024, Australian opener David Warner and South African opener Dean Elgar bid farewell to Test cricket. This year marked the conclusion of several illustrious cricket careers across formats, reflecting the end of eras in the sport.

David Warner (All formats)

David Warner announced his retirement from Test cricket in June 2023 during the Ashes series in England, confirming his final series would be against PAK at home. He also retired from ODIs on New Year’s Day, following his last appearance in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 final against India. Warner played 112 Test matches, scoring 8786 runs, and 161 ODIs, accumulating 6932 runs, with a total of 48 centuries across both formats. He concluded his T20I career in June 2024 after Australia's exit in the ICC T20 World Cup, marking the end of his international cricket journey.

Dinesh Karthik (All formats)

Veteran Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, including the IPL. The 39-year-old's decision came after he was not selected for India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad, despite a strong performance in the IPL 2024 season. Karthik ended a distinguished career that began in the 2002–03 season. Despite competing with MS Dhoni for much of his career, Karthik represented India in 94 ODIs, 60 T20Is, and 26 Test matches. His last international appearance was at the 2022 T20 World Cup. He also participated in 256 IPL matches and was one of the few players to feature in every IPL season up until this year.

Kedar Jadhav (All formats)

In June of this year, 39-year-old Kedar Jadhav announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. Hailing from Pune, Jadhav played 73 ODIs and nine T20Is for India. He scored two centuries and six half-centuries in ODIs and was a member of the 2019 World Cup squad. His final appearance for India came in 2020.

Virat Kohli (T20Is)

During the presentation ceremony of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 final, Indian star batsman Virat Kohli declared his retirement from T20 international cricket while accepting the Man of the Match award. Kohli's pivotal innings of 76 runs played a crucial role in India's victory over South Africa in the final. He leaves the format as the second-highest run-scorer in T20Is and a recipient of two Player of the Tournament awards at the T20 World Cups.

Ravindra Jadeja (T20Is)

Following India's triumph in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, Ravindra Jadeja joined Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in announcing his retirement from T20 international cricket. Jadeja made his decision public on social media just a day after India's victory. Despite this retirement, he will continue to represent India in the other two formats of the game. Jadeja featured in 74 T20Is for India between 2009 and 2024, scoring 515 runs and claiming 54 wickets with his bowling skills.

Rohit Sharma (T20Is)

Following his leadership in India's victory at the T20 World Cup 2024, Rohit Sharma declared his retirement from T20 international cricket. He became the third Indian captain to secure a World Cup title. At the point of his retirement, Rohit holds the record for the most runs scored in T20Is and was the second-highest run-scorer in the T20 World Cup 2024.
