Five Signs That Indicate Your Infant Is Lactose Intolerant: Foods To Be Avoided

If all types of milk leave your little one suffering from an upset stomach, you are probably wondering if they are lactose intolerant.

Lactose intolerance following premature birth or a viral ailment is generally temporary — and eventually, your infant’s body may induce the production of normal levels of the lactase enzyme that is required to digest the sugar content in milk. But if your little one suffers from congenital lactase deficiency, it is a lasting condition, and you will have to modify your infant’s diet to prevent them from falling sick.

Signs indicating lactose intolerance

If your infant is lactose intolerant, they will experience more symptoms with greater consumption of lactose. Look out for some common symptoms in your baby after they consume dairy products, watery diarrhea, loose stools, gas, vomiting, nausea, stomach bloating, skin rash, cramping, and generalized abdominal pain.

Difference between milk allergy and lactose intolerance

Parents often confuse milk allergy with lactose intolerance. Despite having similar symptoms, both ailments are completely different conditions. Milk allergy refers to a serious immune system reaction, and it usually occurs in the first year after birth. However, lactose intolerance refers to a digestive issue that can be seen in infants but rarely.

Frequent crying

Your little one cannot verbally express if and when they are suffering from abdominal cramps, making it difficult for the parents to determine the cause. However, if your infant cries very frequently after dairy consumption, it could imply they are experiencing painful cramps. If you suspect lactose intolerance in your infant, quickly get them diagnosed.

How to identify flatulence and bloating

Your infant may not be able to convey their condition or uneasiness, but you should check for flatulence and bloating. If your little one’s belly is stiff, and they pass air frequently, it could indicate lactose intolerance. Try gently pressing your infant’s belly, if they squeal in response to it, that could indicate bloating. If it happens after dairy consumption, immediately consult a pediatrician for a diagnosis.

Foods you should avoid feeding your lactose intolerant infant

When purchasing baby food, carefully read labels and avoid buying items that contain lactose (milk by-products, whey, dry milk solids, curds, and nonfat dry milk powder). Other popular baby foods that may contain lactose are prepared oatmeal, yogurt, pancakes, instant mashed potatoes, biscuits (also teething biscuits), pudding, cookies, cheese, and ice cream.

If you think your infant faces trouble digesting dairy products - without further ado, check with your pediatrician.
