
F1 101: Engine Suppliers for 2021
Many may not be aware that in Formula One, several car manufacturers supply racing engines to numerous teams on the grid
In the world of Formula One, there are some teams that not only possess tons of money but also have engineers who create the engines for them. For example, Mercedes-AMG and Ferrari are two teams that are known for producing different types of cars in the world. Therefore, these teams rely on their engineers to create their machines. However, some teams lack the resources for creating Formula One engines. To compete in the races, they derive engine from other manufacturers and fix them in their F1 cars.
In 2021, let’s have a look at which manufacturers are supplying engines to which teams.
AMG Petronas Formula One Team- As mentioned in the introductory paragraph, Mercedes-AMG is a renowned car manufacturer in the world and therefore, they do not rely on other manufacturers. They have their own engine which is a 1.6 V6 turbo engine. Point to note that all the F1 teams in 2021 use a 1.6 V6 turbo engine.
Scuderia Ferrari- Another name which is known for manufacturing fancy sports car, Ferrari uses its engine and the name of their car is SF21.
Red Bull Racing- Red Bull Racing is a big name in Formula One because they are the only team that poses a threat to Mercedes. However, Red Bull is known in the world for its energy drink and therefore, they rely on Honda for engines. The name of their car is RB16B.
Alpine- Mostly a mid-table racing team, Alpine is headed by veteran driver Fernando Alonso and youngster Ocon. Alpine derives its racing engine from French manufacturer Renault.
HAAS F1 Team- One of the worst teams in F1, HAAS buys its engine from Ferrari.
McLaren- A few good finishes from Norris and Daniel has turned McLaren into a favourite of many. McLaren’s engine is sourced from Mercedes.
Aston Martin- Aston Martin has returned to Formula One after almost 60 long years and in their return season, they are relying on a Mercedes-sourced engine.
Alfa Romeo- Headed by the Iceman Kimi Raikkonen, Alfa Romeo hits the track with an engine from Ferrari.
Alpha Tauri- Sister team of Red Bull Racing, Alpha Tauri also relies on an engine from Honda.
Williams- Once a champion team, now a struggler; the F1 team of Williams relies on an engine sourced from Mercedes.
