Copa America 2024: From Casemiro to Paulo Dybala, The Best 11 Not Picked for the Tournament

A definitive playing 11 who missed out!

The Copa América is organised by CONMEBOL, South America's football governing body. The most recent edition was held in 2021, synchronised with the UEFA Euro, and it takes place every four years. The upcoming Copa América will mark the 48th edition of the tournament. Argentina will defend their title in this year's competition. Scheduled from June 20 to July 14, 2024, the tournament will be hosted by the USA. Throughout its storied history, the Copa América has seen numerous star players showcase their talents on its stage. Yet, with every prestigious tournament's commencement, there are invariably star players who find themselves excluded. This article examines the Best XI players who were not selected for the 2024 Copa América. We'll structure the team in a 3-4-3 formation.

Ederson (GK)

Despite featuring prominently in the last Copa América, Ederson has spent much of the past seven years as a backup to Alisson for the Brazil national team. His hopes for increased playing time under new coach Dorival Junior were dashed after sustaining an eye socket fracture against Tottenham.

Gary Medel (CB)

With around 160 appearances for Chile, Gary Medel's aggressive style and transition from midfield to centre-back under Marcelo Bielsa marked his career. However, Ricardo Gareca's decision to omit him from the national team could signal the end of his international career.

Robert Arboleda (CB)

Agile and quick, Arboleda has been a fixture in Ecuador's national team for seven years, participating in the last three Copa Américas and the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Yet, Coach Felix Sanchez's decision to exclude him after an incident involving a minor at a New York nightclub has raised eyebrows.

Pervis Estupiñán (CB)

Estupiñán's absence from Ecuador's squad is due to an ankle injury sustained during his season with Brighton & Hove Albion. His ability to control the left flank and contribute to attacks will be missed, though he aims to return for World Cup qualifiers later this year.

Casemiro (CDM)

Renowned for his defensive qualities, Casemiro has been a linchpin for both club and country over the past decade. However, a disappointing season with Manchester United led to his exclusion from Brazil's squad, with Coach Dorival Junior opting for younger talents.

Matías Vecino (CM)

Vecino's retirement at 32 came as a surprise, given his key role in Uruguay's midfield over eight years. His decision followed reports of dissatisfaction over losing his spot to Manuel Ugarte in the national team.

Arturo Vidal (CM)

A stalwart in Chile's midfield since 2007, Vidal's work rate and versatility have been pivotal in the team's success. However, recent form inconsistencies and injuries led to his omission from Ricardo Gareca's squad for the crucial tournament.

Paulo Dybala (CAM)

Dybala's aspirations in Argentina's midfield have been hampered by Lionel Messi's dominance and persistent injuries. Despite his stellar club career, he failed to secure a place in the squad for Copa América 2024.

Neymar (LW)

Brazil's leading scorer Neymar's impact has been undeniable, but recurring injuries kept him out of Copa América 2024. His absence emphasises the team's challenge without their talismanic forward.

Antony (RW)

Antony's talent is unquestionable, but a disappointing season with Manchester United saw him lose his place to in-form wingers like Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior in Brazil's lineup.

Richarlison (CF)

A consistent starter for Brazil, Richarlison's hopes for Copa América 2024 were dashed by an injury sustained during practice with Tottenham, highlighting the unpredictability of sports.

One major thing to note about the importance of each of these players is their ability to turn a game in their home country’s favour. This Copa America could have gone any way if these greats were around!
