Copa America 2024: A Look at the Countries With the Most Triumphs at the Tournament

The dominant champions of the Americas!

The Copa América stands as the premier football tournament for national teams from South and North America, originating in 1916 and ranking among the oldest ongoing football competitions. Initially featuring a 12-team roster, it expanded to 16 teams in 2016. The tournament's intensely physical style of play among South American teams makes it notoriously challenging to win. Throughout its history, the Copa América has been graced by legendary players such as Diego Maradona, Pelé, Lionel Messi, Neymar Jr., and many others. Several national teams have clinched multiple continental championships. Let's now examine the top 5 countries with the most Copa América titles.

Chile – 2

Chile didn't achieve success in the continental tournament until 2015, when they claimed their first-ever title. Prior to this breakthrough, Chile had been runners-up on four occasions: in 1955, 1956, 1979, and 1987. Their first taste of glory came when they defeated Argentina in a penalty shootout on home soil in 2015. This victory was historic as it marked Chile's inaugural Copa América title. Undeterred, Chile continued their success the following year, once again defeating Lionel Messi's Argentina in a penalty shootout to secure their second consecutive title.

Paraguay – 2

Paraguay stands out as an unexpected presence in this list of Copa América achievements. They have claimed the tournament's title twice and finished as runners-up on six occasions. Paraguay secured their first Copa América title in 1957 by defeating Brazil 3-2 in the finals. Their second title came in 1979 after the playoffs ended in a draw, with Paraguay eventually prevailing 3-1 on aggregate to clinch their second Copa América championship.

Brazil – 9

The Seleção are arguably the most renowned and successful national team globally. Brazil's football squad has consistently been a powerhouse, consistently producing numerous talents over the years. Despite withdrawing from the Copa América tournament on nine separate occasions and occasionally sending their B-teams, Brazil has amassed nine Copa América titles. One of their most famous and dominant victories occurred in 1949, when they defeated Paraguay 7-0 in the finals. They have also finished as runners-up on twelve occasions, with their most recent second-place finish occurring in 2021.

The glorious trophy of the Copa America!

Uruguay – 15

La Celeste boasts numerous national accolades. Uruguay, despite being a small country with a population of approximately 3.5 million, holds the distinction of winning the inaugural editions of both the FIFA World Cup and Copa América. Uruguay stands out as one of the few nations to have dominated much of the Copa América tournament since its inception in 1916. They clinched the title a remarkable 14 times between 1916 and 1995. However, their success has waned in recent years, with Uruguay managing only one Copa América title since 1995, achieved in 2011.

Argentina – 15

Argentina has experienced both triumphs and setbacks in the Copa América. Alongside Uruguay, they hold the record for the most Copa América titles, with 15 victories. However, Argentina has also endured defeat in 14 finals. The peak of Argentina's dominance occurred in the 1940s and 1950s, particularly during the 1940s, when they clinched four Copa América titles. This included an impressive three consecutive wins from 1945 to 1947. During this era, Norberto Méndez emerged as a standout player, contributing significantly to Argentina's success in winning three consecutive Copa América titles. Méndez remains the tournament's all-time leading scorer with 17 goals.

Other teams have tried for glory, but none have succeeded like these five countries. What remains to be seen is if they keep their streak in the Copa America 2024.
