BuzzRanked! From India to England, A Look at the Nations with Most T20 Wins

These are the world leaders in the most popular format of the game!

T20I cricket, introduced in 2005, differs significantly from Tests and ODIs and has quickly risen to be the most popular format among fans. Initially played infrequently, T20Is have become a regular feature in international cricket, driven by the excitement surrounding the T20 World Cup, held every two years. Currently, 103 teams compete in this format globally. Among them, only six teams have surpassed the milestone of 100 T20I wins as of July 2024. In this article, we will explore the top five teams with the most victories in T20I cricket.

India

Team India made history by winning the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, establishing themselves as one of the best in this format. India leads with the most T20I wins, having played 232 matches and won 152 games, boasting an exceptional W/L ratio of 2.202—the highest for a Test-playing nation. They have lost 69 games, with five matches ending in ties and six with no result. India continues to dominate and aims to extend its lead over other teams in T20I cricket.

New Zealand

New Zealand, along with Australia, played the first official T20I game in 2005. Despite their impressive performances, the Black Caps have yet to secure an ICC title in this format. However, their overall record remains commendable. New Zealand became the third team to win over 100 T20Is and play more than 200 matches. To date, they have played 220 games, winning 111 and losing 92, with ten matches ending in ties and seven with no result. Their consistent performances keep them among the top teams in T20I cricket, demonstrating their strength and resilience in the shortest format of the game.

Australia

Australia played the first official T20I match in 2005. However, their T20I stats haven’t been as impressive compared to other formats. They secured their maiden T20 World Cup title in 2021 in the UAE. To date, Australia has played 195 matches, winning 105 and losing 83. Additionally, three matches ended in ties and four with no result. Despite their relatively modest record, Australia remains a formidable team in T20I cricket, always striving to improve their standing in the shortest format of the game.

South Africa

South Africa has consistently been an impressive team in the T20I format. Although the Proteas have not secured any titles, their record surpasses that of some world champions. They played their first T20I match in October 2005 against New Zealand. To date, South Africa has played 185 matches, winning 104 and losing 77, with one game ending in a tie and three with no result. Their best performance in an ICC T20 World Cup came in 2024, where they finished as runners-up.

England

England, the nation that introduced cricket to the world, played their first official T20I game in June 2005 against Australia. Known for their strong performances in the shortest format, England has won the T20 World Cup twice, in 2010 and 2022. Their consistent excellence has established them as a formidable team in T20I cricket. To date, England has played 192 matches, winning 100 of them. Their success in the T20 World Cup and their impressive win record reflect their strength and adaptability in this dynamic format, making them one of the top contenders in international T20 cricket.
