An inspirational story of Anand Kumar, a gifted mathematician who provided free coaching to underprivileged students.
Many times, we come across such stories of selfless service to society that inspires us all. In the country where for poor and underprivileged can only dream of studying in the top institute of the country, one man in Bihar is making this dream a reality. Anand Kumar, a mathematician and a teacher is coaching poor and underprivileged students for free for IIT-JEE. His super 30 program focuses on giving coaching to deserving and bright students from humble backgrounds.
Early Life
Anand Kumar is born and raised in Patna, Bihar. His father was a postal department clerk. Anand Kumar was really sharp in studies and had a keen interest in the field of Mathematics. Due to his keen interest in Mathematics, he submitted a paper on number theory, which was much appreciated and got published in many math journals.
Starting out
Due to his keen interest and proficiency in Mathematics, he soon secured admission to the University of Cambridge. But due to many financial restrains and his father’s death, he had to give up that dream. He started working with his mother to sell Papads. After some time, he started his institute for teaching Mathematics. He rented a room for mere 500 rupees and started Ramanujan School of Mathematics in the year 1992. Soon, more than 500 students enrolled in this institute, and his fame grew.
Super 30
During this time, he came across a poor student who wanted to study for the IIT-JEE entrance examination but could not afford the tuition fees. This motivated him to start Super 30 programs, which offered free lodging and coaching to the deserving underprivileged students. Every year, the RSM institute holds a competitive exam and selects deserving and brilliant thirty students who are provided free lodging, food, study material and coaching to prepare for competitive examination. Out of 450 students, he taught till 2017, 391 made it to the IIT. His work came to spotlight when in the year 2009, discovery channel featured a one-hour long documentary on Anand Kumar’s Super 30. Government and several private organizations came forward to financially support Super 30, but Anand Kumar wants to sustain it with his own meagre earnings.
In addition to many accolades and awards, Anand Kumar’s story was brought to life by Vikas Behl’s “Super 30” starring Hritik Roshan.
