Since seasonal changes take a heavy toll on the skin, it is time for some precautionary measures to ensure a smooth passage through each season and a year-round youthful glow.

The passage of time and the dramatic upheavals in weather wreak havoc on skin. Drastic even mild alterations affect the pH balance and trigger a series of skin anomalies. Acne, flaky skin, dull skin, oily skin, blemishes, and open pores are some manifestations of seasonal changes that meddle with the health and glow of the skin. Why is it important to act pronto? Because the skin takes quite some time to heal and from the aftermath. Sometimes, you simply slide from one seasonal damage to the next without getting ample time to bounce back into health.

Hydrate Adequately

Weather changes, especially during winter, can strip your skin of its natural moisture, leading to dryness, flakiness, and irritation. Parallelly, during summer, the heat can dehydrate your skin, making it dull and prone to early signs of ageing.Moisturisers create a protective barrier on the skin, helping to lock in hydration and make the skin soft, plump, and supple. A good moisturiser replenishes the natural oils that wear off due to dry, cold winds or indoor heating in winter. Moisturising is also crucial to maintain the skin’s moisture balance during hot, dry conditions in summer. Choosing the right type of moisturizer for your skin type (cream-based for dry skin, gel-based for oily skin) ensures optimal results.

Apply Sunscreen Daily

UV radiation from the sun can damage the skin year-round, not just in summer. You may tend to forgo sunscreen in winter and monsoon and cause some irreversible damage. Overexposure to UV rays can lead to sunburn, premature ageing, hyperpigmentation, and an increased risk of skin cancer. Even on cloudy or cold days, up to 80% of UV rays can penetrate the skin.

Skin experts are all in favour of using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 for shielding the skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Sunscreen is a potent shield against harmful rays. Applying sunscreen every day, even in winter or on overcast days, ensures that your skin is constantly protected from UV damage.

Adjust Your Skincare Routine

Different weather conditions require different skincare approaches. What works for your skin in one season might not be as effective or could be even counterproductive in another.

In winter, consider switching to a heavier, cream-based moisturizer and incorporating hydrating serums to combat dryness. In summer, a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer, along with a gentle exfoliant, can help manage excess oil and prevent clogged pores. Adjusting your skincare products to match the season ensures that your skin gets the right balance of hydration and protection, preventing issues like breakouts, dryness, and sensitivity.

Protect Your Skin with Clothing

Exposing bare skin to the brazen environmental pollutants is one reason why skin problems aggravate during the transition period. Exposure to harsh elements like cold winds, sun, and pollution can damage the skin, leading to conditions, such as windburn, sunburn, and premature ageing.

Wearing protective clothing, such as hats, scarves, and long sleeves, shields your skin from direct exposure to pollutants, toxins, and other harmful natural elements. In winter, this helps prevent windburn and moisture loss, while in summer, it provides a physical barrier against UV rays. Use soft and breathable fabrics like cotton to ensure comfort and reduce skin irritation caused by sweating or chafing.
