Temple: “A place where our soul meets the divine in prayers, a place where we find strength indebted in our faith, a place which binds the whole community contributing for peace.”

The essence of India is spirituality. The temples and the scriptures are the foundations of the spiritual sense within us. For thousands of years,we have been going to the temple and asking for God’s grace. It is not only a ritual but a sense and wisdom which we have imbibed by understanding the reason behind this. So many temples have been built by different emperors, some have been destroyed, some are still surviving. In this article we’ll talk about such ancient temples which are still surviving in the various parts of India and you should definitely think of visiting them at least for once. Now, it’s time to know about them in detail.

Mundeshwari Devi Temple, a place of Lord Shiva in Bihar

It is quite surprising to know that Mundeshwari Devi Temple is considered the oldest functional temple in the world. The Archaeological Survey of India confirms that this temple was built in 108AD probably by the Saka emperors. The octagonal shape of the temple is truly an example of rare construction which was later considered as a sample of the Nagara architectural style.

Subrahmanya Temple, a conglomeration of two different eras

Before 2005, we didn’t even know the existence of Subramanya Temple, Tamil Nadu. It was because of the disastrous 2004 earthquake, which made it unearthed in 2005. According to the archaeologists, the temple was dedicated to Murugan, the oldest deity of its kind. One more interesting thing is that this temple has evidence of two different eras- one is the Pallava era of the 9th century and the other one is the Sangam era of the 8th century.

Mahabalipuram Temples, another instance of Pallava era in Tamil Nadu

It is another example of the rich ancient culture and heritage of India. This temple still holds the 7th and 8th century within itself. We find a mix of architecture, one rathas (means Chariot) and the other is mandapas (means cave) in the construction of this temple. Lord Shiva is the one who is worshiped here since ages. Now, it has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

So, it can clearly be said that India is an ancient nation, we must preserve these instances which are linked with our root for our future generations so that they can also know and feel the grandeur of this civilization
