From toddlers to senior citizens, walking as an exercise is beneficial to everyone, even to our pets. If you’re a fitness freak you know how important exercising is. This simple form of exercise doesn’t require a gym and has several health benefits like weight loss, low risk of heart attack and stroke, improved balance and bone health, and more. There are some hidden benefits of walking that you probably didn’t know, so let’s jump into our article.
Lowering stress:
There is a chemical in our brain called endorphin also known as the “feel good” chemical (hormone), our brain releases endorphins generally when our body goes through any kind of pain or stress. Studies have shown that walking stimulates the release of endorphins which leads to a brightened-up and improved mood and behavior. Even just 10 minutes of a walk can uplift your mood. So what are you waiting for? Take a nice walk with your pooch.
Sharpening mind:
Exercises such as walking, dancing, and cycling improve the white matter of our brain which generates a good memory and mental health. Many studies have shown that at least 5 miles of weekly walking can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease in elderly adults. Walking also increases blood flow to our brain resulting in improvement in memory and learning centers.
Increased Socializing:
Take a friend, family member, or colleague with you when you go for a walk. If no one’s around you can also join a walking group or a similar community like that, if comfortable you can also put your headphones on and go for solo walks. The more time you walk the more you get time to socialize and connect with people, and nature, maybe your bond gets stronger with a friend or family member, or how about going on walks with your crush?
Helping with sleep:
There are solid pieces of evidence that say walking and other exercises improve the quality of sleep although any kind of adequate amount of exercise increases the chances of slow wave sleep aka deep sleep which gives our mind and body full rest and walking is one of the most simple exercises to start with. Despite all these, the time for a walk matters if you face serious troubles with falling asleep at night. According to experts a night walk before 1-2 hours of going to bed may increase the chances of good sleep.
