It’s tempting to believe that technological advancement is being driven by our globalized world. As we continue to see advancements in artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies, it’s clear that we’re entering a new era of technological innovation.

Unfortunately, many of the technological wonders that we see today are also made possible by the work of ancient inventors.

Central Heating

Although you may not think about it, central heating is a vital component of most homes. In ancient Greece, people believed that it was important to feel warm beneath their feet in a temple. One of the first systems of this type was built at the Temple of Ephesus, which dates back to 350 B.C.

According to historians, the creator of this technology was named Orata. He developed a system that uses stacked tiles and pillars beneath buildings to heat the ground, walls, and floors of public areas such as baths and public buildings. Due to the cost of the system, only the wealthiest individuals could afford it.

Vending machine

Today, vending machines are commonly used to provide fast and nutritious food to travelers. However, back in ancient times, they were originally designed to help people find salvation. In Egypt, the first vending machine was built by Heron of Alexandra and was distributed in various temples.

In addition to coins, people also deposited their coins into a slot that was pressed on a metal valve. This type of invention, which is arguably less inspiring than a packet of crisps or a bar of chocolate, would eventually return centuries later and provide the masses with more nutritious and satisfying food.

Automatic doors

After creating a holy water dispenser, Heron of Alexandria continued to develop his other inventions, such as automatic doors. He utilized various components such as fire altars, water pumps, and pulleys to create a way for people to enter a temple without opening the heavy doors. It is not clear if this technological feat ever made it to a real temple.

Alarm clock

One of the most common inventions that people use today is the alarm clock. Although it is not as sophisticated as the ones that are made today, the first alarms that were made during the time of ancient Greece were designed to sound an alarm whenever pebbles or delicate water organs are dropped into a drum.

In ancient Greece, a philosopher named Plato was said to have a large water clock that was equipped with an alarm signal that was similar to the sounds of a water organ. He reportedly used this device at night to signal the start of his lectures.
