Sridevi was an iconic actor, better known as the first female superstar of India. Her charisma and powerful screen presence made her the most versatile actor in the film industry. She popularized and made us fall in love with chiffon sarees in Lamhe, Chandni and Mr India. She graced the silver screen after a long hiatus with Gauri Shinde’s “English Vinglish” and made her fall in love with naïve and lovable Shashi. - Sridevi’s birth name was Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan. She was born to a Tamil lawyer, Ayaapan and a Telugu actress, Rajeshwari.
- She entered the film industry at the mere age of 4 in the movie “Thunaivan” in the year 1969.
- Interestingly, she played the role of mother to the superstar Rajnikanth character in the movie “Moondru Mudichu” in the year 1976. She was just 13 years old and apparently was paid more than Rajnikanth.
- When she debuted in the Hindi film industry, she faced a lot of trouble speaking Hindi. So, Rekha, who was also a Tamilian and Telugu actress, helped her dub many of her initial movies.
- She was the highest-paid actress in the Hindi film industry from the year 1985 to 1992.
- It is said that she was offered the 1992 blockbuster “Beta”. Sridevi refused to do the movie as she was already doing many movies with Anil Kapoor as her co-star. Her loss was Madhuri Dixit’s gain, and Beta was one of the movies that cemented Madhuri Dixit’s career in Bollywood.
- Sridevi was supposed to do a double role in “Baazigar”, but such was the stardom of Sridevi that the casting director decided not to cast her. He feared the negative reaction of the audience after the antagonist killed the character of Sridevi.
- Her popular rain dance song from the movie Chaalbaaz, “Naa Jaane Kahan Se aayi Hai”, was loved by her fans all over the world. But do you know that Sridevi suffered from a 103-degree fever during the filming of the song?
