Suomenlinna church
Designed by Konstantin Thon and built-in 1854, the church was established earlier as an Eastern Orthodox garrison church for the Russian troops who were stationed at the Suomenlinna sea fortress. The fortress comprising five islands and the church is the central feature located at its highest point. This heritage structure is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Suomenlinna Church is also a major landmark on Helsinki’s southern horizon. The central dome of the church houses a lighthouse.
Helsinki Cathedral
This is the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran cathedral of the Diocese of Helsinki, situated beautifully in the centre of Helsinki at the Senate Square. Also known as St Nicholas's Church, this church was originally completed in 1839 and was built as a tribute to the Grand Duke of Finland, Tsar Nicholas I of Russia. Presently, it is a major landmark of the city and the most famous structure in Finland. The design of the Helsinki Cathedral is neoclassical style with a Greek cross. The dome is surrounded by four smaller domes.
Uspenski Cathedral
This Eastern Orthodox cathedral is the main cathedral of the Orthodox Church of Finland. It is dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos, aka the Virgin Mary. The Uspenski Cathedral is the largest Orthodox cathedral in Western Europe, constructed in 1868 on a massive granite rock. Over the ceiling, one can see the painting of the night sky. The designing and structuring of the church bring certain elements of the Old Russian wooden churches, Byzantine and Russian medieval cathedrals.
Kallio church
This Lutheran church represents National Romanticism with Art Nouveau's influences. The construction of the church was completed in 1912 and was one of Helsinki's most prominent landmarks. The church is also famous for its acoustics, making it a popular venue for concerts. The church is beautifully located on top of a hill overlooking Kallio.
