Salvator Mundi The world’s most expensive painting is by the legendary artist Leonardo da Vinci’s Salvator Mundi, circa 1490–1500 from the High Renaissance period.  For long it was a copy of the original that was veiled with overpainting, but later it was rediscovered, restored, and included in a major Leonardo exhibition at the National Gallery, London. It sold for $450.3 million in 2017 at Christie’s.

The Scream Another most expensive, famous, and iconic paintings in the history of art are by artist Edvard Munch. The original German title given by Munch was Der Schrei der Natur, and the Norwegian title is Skrik. However, there are four versions of the painting ‘The Scream’ there are other a lot less valuable ones as compared to the 1893 oil painting rendition. This oil painting of The Scream is currently on display in Oslo, Norway’s National Gallery. In 2012 it was purchased by a billionaire financier Leon Black for $119.9 million.

Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I By artist Austrian artist Gustav Klimt, the painting is also known as ‘The Lady in Gold’ was completed between 1903 and 1907. It is a painting of a Jewish banker’s wife that is set in 1907 and was commissioned by the sitter's husband. In 2006 it was purchased by a Russian billionaire, named Ronald Lauder, and currently, it is on display at New York’s NeueGalerie.

Les Femmes d’Alger It is a series of 15 paintings and numerous drawings by the famous Spanish artist Pablo Picasso created in 1954–1955. It is said to be inspired by Eugène Delacroix's 1834 painting The Women of Algiers in their Apartment and is one of several works by Picasso as a tribute to the artists that he admired. In 2015 it was sold to a phone bidder at Christie’s auction for $179.4 million.
