Big fan of instant effects of chemical-based shampoos? In an attempt to make your hair look silky smooth straight out of a commercial, you might be causing harm to your hair in the long run. In contrast, natural ingredients in herbal shampoos not only cleanses scalp but also has a curative effect on your hair strands.

Here’s how to choose the right ayurvedic shampoo and conditioner for your hair that protects your hair without weakening its grip from the scalp.

Understand your hair type and problems

Ayurveda believes that physiology of every individual is built up of three forces of nature called doshas that are Vata, Kapha and Pitta. The doshas plays a dominant role in controlling the activities of their mind and body. Sometimes, a person can have two dominant doshas and very rarely, one can find people whose all three doshas are in equal proportion.

Individuals with Vatadosha dominant Prakriti, have thin and dry hair with coarse texture. Include ingredients like argan oil, coconut, jojoba oil and almonds in your shampoo.

Individuals with Pitta dosha in dominance are likely to have soft and straight hair with medium thickness.Avoid heavy ingredients with a creamy quality. Include mint, coconut and neem extracts in your hair product.

Individuals with Kaphadosha may have curly hair with thick volume. Lemon, lemongrass & lime are helpful ingredients for such individuals. Regular head massage is beneficial for kapha types to create stimulation and blood flow.

Doshas turning aggressive during a particular season can further aggravate hair and skin problems. All of these factors should be kept in mind while choosing a shampoo.

Conditioning hair naturally before washing

This Ayurvedic practice of conditioning hair before shampoo seals the natural moisture of your scalp, besides providing excellent nourishment to it. By switching up the order of shampooing and conditioning, your locks won’t be left weighed down with heavy oils as you shampoo your hair the next day

Always use cold or lukewarm water. Massage your scalp in circular motions,  and stroke your hair downward to drain out water after rinsing.

Frequency of washing hair

Kapha hair type need more frequent hair wash as their hair type binds more dirt and dandruff on the scalp. Pitta hair type individuals can wash their hair like 3-4 times a week. And, Vata hair type individuals should wash their hair 1-2 in a week as they are prone to scalp dryness.
