History of Madhubani Art

Arts that lurk in our pious ancient land

India has always been an inspiration in the field of mathematics, education, arts and crafts. But specifically in the field of art, India has come up with several innovative art forms and sculptures. We can find several unique and ethnic art forms in the rural parts all over India. Madhubani art is one such ancient art form that has its origin rooted in the rural areas in the vicinity of Bihar and Nepal. The usage of several complicated geometrical patterns and shapes in most of the Madhubani paintings.

Origin of The Term “ Madhubani”:

The inception and origin of the Madhubani art form are deeply rooted in the Mithila or Madhubani region of Bihar, and this is where the name is acquired from and this is the reason why this particular form of art is called Madhubani art. This is generally can be seen in the rural areas of Bihar and Nepal. The dwellers of the rural areas, specifically women, used and still use this art form to draw paintings over the walls of their houses to decorate them.

How it evolved:

The Madhubani art form is very ancient in India mixed with rural ethnicity. The art form is unique in its way and different from other Indian art forms. The apparatuses used in the art form are generally derived from natural resources like matchsticks, twigs etc and the colours used in this art form were also derived from the natural resources like tomato pulp, or pumpkin and several other similar types of natural resources and this is how it got its uniqueness. As time passed gradually this painting style had made its significant place in any nuptial or religious traditions and rituals. The early reference of Madhubani painting can be found in the Ramayana where King Janaka, Sita’s father, invited some great Madhubani artists to draw Madhubani paintings depicting his daughter’s marriage. Themes of the Madhubani Art form naturally consists of Hindu Gods and Goddesses. But sometimes we can find that several celestial bodies like the Sun and Moon have been the central theme of these Madhubani paintings.

The Styles of Madhubani Art Form:

Madhubani art form constitutes several styles amongst them some styles like Tantrik, Godna and Kohbar which are very popular and known styles of Madhubani Art form. Some other styles can also be mentioned here like Bharni and Katchni which are also quite popular Madhubani art styles. But the painters of recent times have somehow amalgamated all these forms and given them a new shape. Only a few things have changed like the plastered mud base of ancient Madhubani art is substituted with clothes, easels etc. Some recent time painters are striving so hard to take this art form to its apogee and this art form has become popular throughout the whole world nowadays.

Some Famous Madhubani Painters: A huge number of artists all over the world are making masterpieces by adding their form of creativity to these Madhubani paintings. Some popular Madhubani artists whose names will be written with gold in the history of Madhubani art are Gaga Devi, Sita Devi, Bharti Dayal, Jagadamva Devi etc.
