Fun Facts About the Humvee

The actual name of the Humvee is High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle

Around the world, automobile enthusiasts are a huge fan of the Humvee, which was introduced as a military vehicle and continues to be one even today. However, Humvee’s massive popularity forced the manufacturer company to create a civilian version of the Humvee, which as we know it today is called the Hummer. While this is probably a fact known by many, there are several other facts about the world-famous tactical vehicle which much may not be aware of. In this feature, we’ve listed some fascinating facts about the Humvee.

  • In 1979, the army of the United States wanted to induct a unique tactical vehicle into their forces. For this reason, they specified their requirements and provided contracts to three contractors such as the AM General LLC, Chrysler Defence and Teledyne Continental.
  • The prototypes by the three companies were tested for over 6,00,000 miles over arctic snow, 60-inch-deep water, desert heat, deep sand and rocky hills. The prototype made by AM General LLC won the contract.
  • Over the years, the Humvee has been a favourite of 40 nations. So far, 2,00,000 Humvees have been built and all those Humvees can be changed into 20 variants for different purposes.
  • The civilian version of the Humvee which is known as the Hummer went on sale in 1992. Named as the Hummer H1, the civilian Humvee was offered in various versions which included a four-door pickup variant, a station wagon version, a slant back trim and a four-door pickup with a soft top that was convertible in nature.
  • While Humvees were purely meant for the defence forces, Hollywood actor Arnold Schwarzenegger played a crucial role when the majority demanded that the Humvees should be available for private purchasers.
  • The civilian H1 version had several engine options. The list comprises a turbocharged 6.5-litre Detroit Diesel V8, a 6.2-litre GM diesel V8, and a 6.6-litre Duramax turbo diesel V-8 along with a gasoline 5.7-litre Vortec V8.
  • The first civilian H1 version became a famous car in the world and enjoyed a production span of 14 years from 1992 to 2004. However, the sales figures for the vehicle were not impressive. In 14 years, only 11,818 H1 models were sold.
  • Last but not least, the civilian version of Humvee’s life span ended in 2009 and 2010. In 2009, the last H2 was produced whereas the last H3 was rolled out of the factory in 2010.
