Nepal is not only famous for its picturesque beauty and trekking trails, it’s also famous for its diverse and delicious cuisines. Nepali foods vary from western foods and here we will list out five mouthwatering dishes from Nepal you must try:

Dal Bhat 

Dal Bhat is the staple food of almost every Nepali household and is mostly cooked in traditional style in the Nepali Kitchen. 

Dal Bhat will be probably the heaviest dish you will eat in Nepal. Lentils are served with hot steamed rice along with side dishes like meat, various seasonal veggies, pickles and curd. Despite consisting of various items, preparing dal bhat is quite simple and hence it’s a popular dish among trekkers. Dal bhat is the most beloved one amongst Nepali people as it's wholesome and provides almost all the required nutrients.

Momo

You must be familiar with momos which is popular street food in India also especially in North and Northeastern India. Momos are one of the most popular and relished dishes in Nepal also. 

Traditionally momos were stuffed only with minced meat but with time the stuffing has diversified with various types of vegetables and dairy products. Momos basically originated in Tibet and from there it travelled to Nepal and became a famous dish here. They are usually served with a variety of sauces and mayonnaise which makes the momo a delicious food to enjoy as snacks.

Gundruk 

Gundruk is a famous Nepali dish prepared by preparing fermented and dried various types of leafy vegetables like mustard leaves, spinach leaves, mustard leaves etc.

Gundruk is considered as one of the national dishes of Nepal and is a staple diet among the people there. It is basically a fermented leafy green vegetables and it’s popular not only in Nepal but also in every Nepalese diaspora across the globe. It is a flexible dish that can be served both as an appetizer or a side dish and also as a soup. Because of the reason that it is a great source of vitamins and minerals, it’s a staple diet in the rural areas of the country where people frequently feed on maize and tuber.

Sel Roti

Sel roti is a conventional ring-shaped sweet rice bread that is mostly homemade and quite popular in Nepal.

Sel roti is sweet-smelling Nepalese doughnut-like bread prepared from rice flour, sugar, and butter. The dough is furthermore flavored with spices like cloves and cardamom to make it richer. The ring-shaped dough is usually baked from both sides. Sel roti is generally served with tea and other hot beverages, and in Nepal, it is particularly prepared during special occasions and festivals like Tihaar and Dashai.

Kwati

Kwati is a type of soup famous in Nepal that is prepared with various types of sprouted beans. 

Kwati is a traditional soup from Nepal and the main ingredients used are white peas, chickpeas, soya beans, mung beans, kidney beans, and black-eyed peas. It is then prepared by adding additional spices like turmeric, salt, ginger and ajwain to augment the flavor. This is a simple soup to be prepared and can be relished all year long especially during JanāiPurnimā as it warms you inside out and is great for recovery if you are having a fever.
