Almost every mountaineer across the world dreams of climbing Mount Everest. It is located in the Mahalangur part of Himalayas in the countries Nepal and China. Mount Everest is earth's highest mountain above sea level, with an elevation of 8,848.86 m (29,029 ft). It's still growing about 4 mm per year and is about 60 million years old. Here are some interesting facts that you should know about Mount Everest.

  1. Mount Everest was first named Peak 15 in 1856. Then it was renamed after Sir George Everest in 1865. He was a former Surveyor General of India.
  2. On 29th May, 1953, Tenzing Norgay (a Sherpa from Nepal) and Edmund Hillary (a mountaineer from New Zealand) became the first persons to reach the summit of Mount Everest. In 1975, a Japanese woman named Junko Tabei became the first woman to climb Mount Everest.
  3. The summit of Mount Everest is the border of Nepal (to the South) and China or Tibet (to the North).
  4. Mount Everest is called 'Chomolungma' (which means mother Goddess of the universe) by the Tibetan people and 'Sagarmatha' (which means Goddess of the sky) by the Nepali people.
  5. On 23rd May, 2010, Jordan Romero (from America), age 13 years 11 months, became the youngest person to climb Mount Everest. In 2013, a Japanese climber named Yuichiro Miura, who was 80 years old, became the oldest person to climb Mount Everest.
  6. Each breath you take at the Everest, there's 66% less oxygen than at the sea level.
  7. To climb Mount Everest, you need to spend around 50,000 USD.
  8. At least one person dies on Everest each year. It happens due to suffocation, fatigue, starvation, mountain sickness or simply falling into crevasses or avalanches. Over 300 dead bodies are there across the mountain.
  9. It takes 10-14 days of trekking to reach Everest base camp. Then it takes at least 39-40 days to reach the summit.
  10. In 2003, Lakpa Gelu Sherpa became the fastest person to climb Mount Everest, in a time of 10 hours and 56 minutes.
  11. Moni Mulepati and Pem Dorjee, Two Nepalese climbers in 2005, reached the summit point and married there. They even held a 10 minute ceremony at the summit.
  12. Since 1953, over 4000 people have successfully climbed Mount Everest.
  13. Apa Sherpa and Phurba Thasi Sherpa, two Sherpas from Nepal, both have reached the summit point 21 times, which is a record of climbing Mount Everest the most.
