Who knew that learning more about boredom would be so interesting?
Admit it, we all experience boredom at least once a day. It could be anything, maybe a repetitive lecture, attending a meeting, being a part of an important family dinner, the list is endless. There are many kinds of boredom. The fascinating part about these different boredoms is that you might experience only one type of boredom all your life. According to researchers, the reason behind it could be because everyone has a different personality.
The indifferent boredom.
Now, this kind of boredom is a bit relaxing for some. Before you ask us, how could we place boredom and relaxation in the same sentence, understand the implication of the word indifferent? The people who experience indifferent boredom are generally introverts who are withdrawn in their own cocoon, and thus, they often tend to be indifferent to the world outside. For them, this indifference brings calm and relaxation.
The calibrating boredom.
The people with calibrating boredom tend to lose interest in the things they are currently doing or in the way they are doing them. In their mind, they want to do entirely different things. And what are those things?Well, they don’t have the slightest idea. They have a wandering mind, and they may also be not actively looking for alternatives to ease their boredom.
The apathetic boredom.
This type of boredom was discovered quite recently and was talked about in the paper “Motivation and Emotion”. Many high schoolers and even university students experience this type of boredom. It sometimes seems like helplessness and could hype up depression. People with this kind of boredom could show aversion and less arousal, and sadly, more than 36% of high schoolers are said to suffer from it.
The reactant boredom.
This is by far the worst kind of boredom you could experience. People experiencing this type of boredom are full of negativity; they would get angry in an instant and can also be a bit restless. People experiencing this boredom tend to avoid people they feel are responsible for the boredom, like bosses, parents, teachers. They seem to overthink.
The searching boredom.
These people, too, are suffering from the same emotion as reactant boredom people. But makes them different is the fact that they, on the contrary, try to change their outlook by focusing on interesting and fun activities.
So, what kind of boredom do you experience?
