Byomkesh Bakshi is an iconic character in Bengali literature. Created by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay, Bakshi is a "Satyaneshi" (truth-seeker), renowned for his sharp mind, observation skills, and an unparalleled sense of humor. What's more, he is a true family man, unlike most other fictional detective characters. Also, he is popular among the masses nationwide, which owes a lot to several screen adaptations over the years. Many impeccable actors have immortalized him on screen (be it cinema or television shows), from different as well as fascinating approaches.

Rajit Kapur in Doordarshan's 'Byomkesh Bakshi'

In Basu Chatterjee's tv series 'Byomkesh Bakshi', Rajit Kapur played the character to perfection in the truest sense. The series aired in 1993 - 1997 and went on to become a milestone in Indian television. Kapur, being the highlight of the show, impressed everyone with his brilliant screen presence, quirky style, and Bengali mannerisms. Also, his on-screen chemistry with Ajit (played by KK Raina) is the cherry on the cake.

Uttam Kumar in Ray's 'Chiriyakhana'

'Chiriyakhana' is the weakest Ray film, as described by the maestro himself. But still, the film is beloved by many, because of its storyline, camera work, andperformance. Uttam Kumar as Byomkesh was fresh, different, and interesting. He brought wit & enthusiasm to the character and explored his intellect on screen as well. For this, he received the "National Film Award for Best Actor" in 1968.

Abir Chatterjee in Anjan Dutt and Arindam Sil's Byomkesh franchise

Abir Chatterjee played Byomkesh in both Anjan Dutt ('Byomkesh Bakshi', Abar Byomkesh', and 'Byomkesh Phire Elo') and Arindam Sil's ('Har Har Byomkesh', 'Byomkesh Pawrbo', and 'Byomkesh Gotro') films. he brought an attractive style to the character and made it more relatable for the Bengali audience. He became a superstar overnight and went on to be a synonym to Byomkesh Bakshi.

Sushant Singh Rajput in Dibakar Banerjee's 'Detective Byomkesh Bakshi'

In Dibakar Banerjee's 2015 film, late actor Sushant Singh Rajput played Byomkesh, and showed what perfection truly means! He prepared hard for this, and eventually got into the skin of the character with ease. He explored the raw, charming, & energetic sides of the character, and made it completely different from other portrayals so far. Unfortunately, this performance is yet to receive its due acclaim.

Anirban Bhattacharya in Hoichoi's 'Byomkesh' series

Anirban Bhattacharya is the new Byomkesh, in Hoichoi's successful web series named 'Byomkesh'. Being a prolific actor, Bhattacharya succeeds at exploring all the unexplored aspects of Byomkesh, and also makes it conventional with Bengali-ness. He is more romantic here, and his on-screen chemistry with Satyabati (played by Ridhima Ghosh Chakraborty) is loved by all.
