A Brief History Of Brajabuli Literature:

A language is sweeter than Sweets.

Brajbuli is an artificial language of mediaeval Bengali literature. The combination of the Maithili language and Bengali language gave rise to the Brajabuli language. Maithili poet Vidyapati is said to be the creator of the Brajabuli language. Vidyapati made the narrative of Vaishnava verses popular among the people through the sweetness of the Brajabuli language.

The Origin

The oldest literary form of Vaishnavism is Abhattha. Brajbuli originated from this Abhattha language. The gopis of Vrindavan preach about Radha Krishna's divine love in the language of Brajbuli. The hymns of Krishna-Radha's immortal love in the Vaishnava verses sound sweet in this Brajabuli language. Vidyapati wrote many popular poems in the Brajabuli language. Sri Chaitanya spread the hymns of Vidyapati's Krishnalila written in the Brajabuli language among the people of Bangladesh.

The Journey

Yashoraj Khan was the first in Bengal to write a hymn to Lord Krishna in the Brajabuli language. Vaishnava poet Govindadas has written the greatest hymns in the Brajabuli language in Bangladesh.

Sixteenth-century Bengali Vaishnava poets began composing verses on Radhakrishna in imitation of the language and rhythm of Vidyapati's verses. All Vaishnava poets, irrespective of Hindu-Muslim, composed many verses in this language.

Timeline

This trend lasted till the nineteenth century. Rabindranath Tagore wrote his 'Bhanusimha Thakurer Padabali' in the Brajabuli language. As a teenager, Rabindranath Tagore used to write poems under the pseudonym 'Bhanusingho''. It is said that Rabindranath, at the request of his sister-in-law Kadambari Devi, collected Vaishnava lyrics written in Brajabuli language and named them 'Bhanusimha Thakurer Padabali'. After Rabindranath Tagore, no one else in Bangladesh wrote literature in the Brajabuli language. Rabindranath is the last poet in Bangladesh who wrote verses in the Brajabuli language. Brajbuli has been widely practised in Assam and Orissa. Sankardeva in Assam and Ramananda Roy in Orissa were the first to compose hymns to Lord Krishna in Brajabuli.
