Women filmmakers who are taking Indian cinema to the next level

While Indian film industry is mostly male-dominated, there are some women who have been changing the scenarios with their groundbreaking movies.

Whenever we think about Indian filmmakers, an image of a man holding a mic and sitting on a chair in front of monitor comes in our mind. But it's time to change the image as there's a number of women coming on board and working neck and neck with the male filmmakers. So, let's take a look at some of those women filmmakers who are continuously coming up with fresh content and taking Indian cinema to the international level.

Mira Nair

Mira Nair is a globally celebrated filmmaker whose movies capture the societal conflicts in an aesthetic manner. Her best works include 'Salaam Bombay', 'The Namesake', 'Monsoon Wedding' etc.

Deepa Mehta

Another renowned filmmaker, Deepa Mehta is fearless when it comes to dealing with bold and complicated topics in movies. Her Elements trilogy films 'Fire', 'Earth' and 'Water' have been screened at various prestigious international film festivals.

Aparna Sen

Aparna Sen is an award-winning visionary filmmaker who mostly works in Bengali cinema. '36 Chowringhee Lane', 'Mr. and Mrs. Iyer', 'Paramitar Akdin' etc. are among her most notable works.

Zoya Akhtar

A critically acclaimed as well as commercially successful filmmaker, Zoya Akhtar has set a benchmark with her coming-of-age Bollywood movies like 'Luck by Chance', 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara', 'Gully Boy' etc.

Meghna Gulzar

Daughter of famous lyricist Gulzar, Meghna Gulzar is known as a filmmaker who loves to do experiment with complex subjects in movies. She has directed successful films like 'Filhaal', 'Talvar', 'Raazi' etc. in Bollywood.

Rima Das

Rima Das is a one-woman army who frequently handles numerous departments of filmmaking. Working in Assamese cinema, Das has made two masterpiece movies 'Village Rockstars' and 'Bulbul Can Sing' till date.

Reema Kagti

Reema Kagti is one of those Bollywood filmmakers who don't prefer coming into limelight, despite of having made some truly brilliant movies. Her best works include 'Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd.' and 'Talaash'.

Konkona Sen Sharma

While Konkona is mostly known as an extraordinary actress, she is equally good when it comes to direction. 'A Death in the Gunj' brought her a lot of acclaim as a filmmaker from various parts of the world.

Anjali Menon

A skilled filmmaker whose each movie conveys a plethora of emotions to its viewers, Anjali Menon predominantly works in Malayalam cinema. 'Bangalore Days' and 'Koode' are among her best works.

Nandita Das

Aside from being an exceptionally talented actor, Nandita Das is also a skilled filmmaker who always comes up with some important and socially relevant contents. Her 'Firaaq' and 'Manto' are must-watch for any film student.
